Firefox slow on Windows 10 after recent firefox update (2025) 138.0.3 (64 bit)
Using Google Voice became unusable. Firefox too slow. Had been running just fine up till maybe a month ago when I finally gave in and allowed Firefox to update. Not knowing if it was a Windows or other issue I stupidly did a Windows reset and lost all my installed programs (including Firefox). I did a fresh install of Firefox and manually reentered passwords and bookmarks.
Ran fine for a day or two and is now again unusable. Cleared cache and appears to work OK at the moment but still sluggish.

Tried uninstalling and installed 128.10.0esr (64-bit) instead. No joy. Voice still garbled when calling with Google Voice. I also tried to change about:config but Firefox does not appear to respect dom.ipc.processCount nor browser.cache.memory.enable nor browser.cache.disk.enable. Yes, did restart Firefox after making the changes.
In task Manager, Firefox processes quickly explodes to more than 11 and Memory usage close to 1GB. What does it need all that memory for???

FISSION: The links are sites explaining the Firefox's Project Fission. This is the reason for the processes you see in task manager. You can turn fission off by setting it to false on the about:config page. see screenshot Here is more info. https://www.ghacks.net/2016/02/15/change-how-many-processes-multi-process-firefox-uses/

Post a screenshot of Task Manager Performance Tab. Just curious to see what you're working with.
Also provide system info. DIY? If not DIY, provide the make and model of the computer. I'm in GV(Google Voice) everyday. I use it as my main phone at home and work.

Google Voice used to run just fine in Firefox. Google Voice appears to run fine in Micorsoft Edge at the moment. Edge uses about 160MB and 7 processes with just Google Voice open.
Firefox with Google Voice opened is rapidly passing 600MB (yesterday up to 1.4GB) and 11 processes even with: dom.ipc.processCount = 4 browser.cache.disk.enable = false browser.cache.memory.enable = false fission.autostart = false
I've read about prefetching but have not found a way in about:config to disable it. What is Firefox doing with all that memory?
Used to love Firefox but that this point consider switching to Edge or Opera or some other browser. It's beyond my comprehension that a browser should need hundreds of magabytes of memory. But hate to lose my passwords and bookmarks and have to reverify identity at sites each time I (re)install a new browser.
Of course I can't be 100% sure that Google Voice not running on Firefox fully is a Firefox issue -- thought perhaps a Windows update or Windows Defender or something introduced a problem. As I said, Google Voice ran fine for a day after a WIndows Reset (really a reinstall and removes all apps :( ). All I can do is look in Task Manager and see the vast number of Firefox processes and memory usage.
Another thing that puzzles me is the 22% CPU usage by System Processes I see when I open Task Manager.
In about:processes I see that GPU is the worst offender. My built-in graphics is Intel HD 5500 with 128MB. The GPU process currently has 475MB reserved but only use a few % of that. Is there a way to have Firefox dynamically allocate memory to the GPU process?
Also it's only recently that I noticed the GPU columns in Windows Task Manager. I wonder how long that's been there.
