When I log into my thunderbird email, it says it cannot connect to server. How can I fix this ASAP so I can receive mail?

I open Thunderbird and it thinks for a second then the error message says it cannot connect to server. It has the options to retry, enter new password, or cancel. Nothing is working and I'm not receiving any mail.
