Anyway to make mouse button 4 and 5 not go back and forward but still retain there functionality with other programs

This has been brought up a few times but Mozilla refuses to add this functionality or to simply explain to us why they cant. And please do not tell me to just use X-Mouse Controls because there is absolutely no reason why this can't be done or explained to us.

Don't really care if this counts as spam...this issue has been annoying since Ventrilo and Firefox has co-existed.

Thank you, Have a nice day!

What mouse are you using?

You can't do this for Firefox without using X-Mouse Button Control AFAIK.
Firefox doesn't have support to change those mouse button actions and at least that program appears to work as reported by some.

I am using X-Mouse Button Control and it does do what I need. I have just always been baffled that Firefox has never added this functionality in the 8?9?10? years of being around.

As for my mouse, I am using a Logitech G9. I can not use its software to change what I want because I need my mouse button 4 and 5 to work as 4 and 5.

So cor-el, it looks like you are the go to guy for any support questions or something along those lines. Is there anyway you can at least find out why they can not do this. I am positive people would enjoy knowing why it can not be done rather then just being told they can't do it.

Firefox doesn't recognize mouse controls other than a left button, right button, and middle button, and scroll wheel.

Either your Logitech SetPoint software or a feature of Windows is interpreting those buttons and sending commands to Firefox.

Firefox apparently cannot distinguish those commands from user commands and selectively ignore them.

Logitech's SetPoint program has an application profile feature to allow you to customize the buttons for different apps. That doesn't help here?

It is windows then and I figured that would be the answer. Although, I take it I won't get the real answer I want, that being from an actual developer/employee that would know for sure.

I didn't know SetPoint did what you said and it does do it after seeing. It doesn't however work the way I'd need it to work so I guess X-Mouse will do for now until Mozilla comes to there senses.

Now I need to start spamming windows support services to figure out how to change mouse button 4 and 5 O.o

It is likely a feature that is added by the Logitech setpoint software that sends a macro for those extra buttons. If keys are send then there is not much that a program can do unless they intercept the mouse presses before that software sees them.

it may be a windows setting, but cor-el never reported back.

firefox 15.0.1

i am using a ocz equalizer, i have no software installed and have the same functions that i would like to disable, however when i am running mac os x 10.7.5 on my laptop (hackintosh, XD) the buttons act as the middle mouse click.

therefore i have to assume firefox is possibly interpreting the clicks different and it should be possible to tell the browser to ignore them.

Hi fallen00sniper, Firefox doesn't interface directly with input devices, but it does interpret the signals sent by the OS. You could set Firefox to ignore all middle clicks (i.e., to do nothing), but Firefox may not be able to distinguish between the various buttons which generate the same middle click.
