Coincident with numerous Windows 10 updates and subsequent Firefox updates I see a tooltip hint of Firefox(5) on the taskbar icon i have. I see that as i mouse over the icon before clicking. As far as I know this is the fifth iteration of the icon reflecting the number of Firefox updates that have occurred since some unknown point in time approximately 4-6 months ago. I am not sure where that iteration or instance number is being stored perhaps buried in the registry some where. it is not found in Windows File Explorer. This is more an observation than a complaint or inconvenience. it just seems superfluous. any comments?

Hi, it should not be doing that and your guess is a good one. You could leave it or fix it by : uninstall Firefox. Then Delete the Mozilla Firefox Folders in C:\Program Files , C:\Program Files(x86) & C:\ProgramData Then restart system. Then run Windows Disk Cleanup. (Note: This should be Pinned and run Weekly, If never done below expect 10's of gig's) Then run it again and click the button that says Cleanup System Files. Note: your Firefox Profile is saved. But you should make a back up before you do :

Reinstall with Current Release Firefox 59.0.3 with a Full Version Installer

Note : 59.0.3 is needed and is compatible with Windows 10 Spring Update released yesterday .

Note fyi : Windows Spring Update out April 30th so back up stuff you want to save to another drive. https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft-announces-windows-10-april-2018-update You can use Media Creator and update now or you can wait. Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

Hi, I had this a few years ago. The notes I made at the time are below, but keep in mind that this is for Win7 so you might have to get into things in a slightly different way in Win10.

It happens when you have pinned and unpinned, then re-pinned in a different way - such as from the Start Menu then from a Desktop shortcut, and if you do this, unpinning does not remove the icon from the User Pinned file, so there are now 2 (or more) copies.

To fix this, first you need to show hidden files and folders: Control Panel > Appearance > Folder options (View tab) > Hidden files and folders > Show hidden files and folders and drives.

Now double click the C drive to open it, > Users > (your name) > App Data > Roaming > Microsoft > Internet Explorer > Quick Launch > User Pinned > Taskbar, then right click and Delete Firefox.

Now right click on the Taskbar icon and remove it; next start Firefox from the icon in the Start Menu and right click > Pin it to the Taskbar.

The number should now have gone.

Finally, go back and hide hidden files and folders again: Control Panel > Appearance > Folder options (View tab) > Hidden Files and folders > Don't show hidden files folders or drives.

If your question is resolved by this or another answer, please take a minute to let us know. Thank you!

Thank you, Pkshadow and Scribe. I meant to state that this has to do with pinning to the taskbar for convenience. After a Firefox update, i will see a temporary icon where the standard logo icon would be. if i click on this i get an advisory popup that the link is not valid anymore. So typically, i will right click on the desktop icon and select 'pin to taskbar' after deleting the invalid. Because of the update instabilities i have experienced since upgrading my Win7pro machine to Win10, I am a bit reluctant to get too far under the hood. The problem is that some of the issues i am experiencing with Win10 seem to be too esoteric for local techs to resolve. Third world region of USA

Suggest you use the link to update Win10 then to 1803 or you can simply run this to fix the registry in Win10 though it will not help with Firefox.

  • Repair System Registry and Files

Find the Dos Prompt or Powershell then Right Click and Run as Administrator then : Copy/Paste to Dos Window : DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth then hit Enter. Reboot when completed. Note : DISM goes up to Microsoft for new files.
