Since this last update I can't open links in Hotmail. This applies to nearly ALL links. It won't even open tracking links from USPS.

Hi willban1, mistakes happen in software, no need to take it personally.

A team of developers worked on this over the weekend and developed a fix that will be in testing this week in the Nightly release, but it's not likely that Firefox 58 will get the update for 1-3 weeks.

Meanwhile, I have a new workaround for you that you might like better:

(A) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful or accepting the risk.

(B) In the search box above the list, type or paste stylo and pause while the list is filtered

(C) Double-click the layout.css.stylo-blocklist.enabled preference to switch the value from false to true

(D) Double-click the layout.css.stylo-blocklist.blocked_domains preference and set the value to live.com and click OK. (In the unlikely event that you already had one or more sites listed add ,live.com to the list.)

Then exit/quit Firefox and start it up again to make the change effective.

Does it work for you?

Hotmails works fine in FF58x64. Even USPS tracking works fine in FF58. So how did you do the update and what bit version was installed and what was the bit version of the previous FF?

I updated to FF58X64. My previous version was X64. This is ridiculous. It seems that Mozilla is so obsessed with making sure I am secure that it is blocking everything. I don't have a choice, they decide.

When I follow the steps outlined in the control center, the option to 'temporarily allow' does not exist.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

Clear the cache and remove the cookies from websites that cause problems via the "3-bar" Firefox menu button (Options/Preferences).

"Clear the cache:

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security -> Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove the cookies" from websites that cause problems.

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security -> "Use custom settings for history" -> Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Outlook has a "Reading Pane" you can show on the right side of the Inbox. In that case, when you click a message, it displays on the side. (Example screenshot attached.)

If you hide the Reading Pane, then the message appears in front of the Inbox.

In Firefox 58, there is some strange problem with links that appear in front of text in the Inbox list. A click in that area (on a link or even on the message background) seems to "pass through" to the Inbox and select a different message instead of being received by the currently displayed message. It doesn't happen on every message, but once it starts happening, it seems to keep happening. I don't know why.

When I switch to the "beta" Outlook design, I cannot replicate this problem. It seems to work fine.

Two thoughts:

(1) If you have a wide display, you could try using the Reading pane on the right. However, if your display is not wide enough, there will be an inconvenient amount of horizontal scrolling. Also, you see a smaller section of your Inbox.

(2) You could try sliding the "Try the beta" switch that appears above the Inbox and see whether that works better for you.

Do either of those workarounds help?

This is total BS. Mozilla installs a browser with a 'strange problem' that forces me to either use an email display that I don't like just so that it will allow me to fully use my email. It appears there is no way to revert to my prvious version of FF, so I'm screwed. Mozilla-wouldn't it be even safer if FF didn't allow the user to connect to ANYTHING on the internet? Obviously I as a user am not capable of deciding these things for myself. What you consider proper viewing decisions must be forced on me. No choice, just 'this is what we have decided'.

I made the changes you outlined and it seems to be working. I'll see after a few days of use.

That worked for opening the link. When I get to the site linked, which is usually retailer website I am still unable to open their circulars or sale announcements. If I go back and disable ad blocker and tracking protection it will work for that one item but if I try to view another item on the same website I have to go back, reenable tracking protection and ad blocking and then disable them again to view. Total BS.

more options

Some sites do not work normally with tracking protection and content blockers active. However, when you are viewing the ad page, and use the shield icon to disable tracking protection, Firefox should reload the page in that same tab with the blocked content included, so you should not need to go back and forth to your email just to view one particular page. If making an exception in your ad blocker doesn't seem to do anything, try using the Reload button on the toolbar, still in the ad page tab.

Hi Ronshere, the problem covered by this thread was a fairly unique situation affecting Outlook mail in an older version of Firefox. That workaround is not applicable to other versions of Firefox.

Since you have Firefox 61, it would make more sense to start a new thread:
