The problem is not related to my profile

The profile is where your settings and other information is stored.

Why does the computer not retain my selection ?

Note: Some software, like Advanced SystemCare with Surfing Protection, can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes. If you have such software then check the settings or uninstall this software.

Separate Security Issue: Update your Flash Player Note: Windows users should download the ActiveX for Internet Explorer. and the plugin for Plugin-based browsers (like Firefox).

Note: Windows 8 and Windows 10 have built-in flash players and Adobe will cause a conflict. Install the plugin only. Not the ActiveX.

Flash Player Version: Version 28.0.0.126

There was an add-on that auto creates backups of your profile. But it does not work in the current Firefox.

Every now and then, open the profile folder and create a copy of the current profile as is to another location on your hard drive. This way you will have a backup.

If you do this each day, you will not lose much data. This should be done with Firefox Closed.

Note: You may need to overwrite old or corrupted files.

The problem is not related to my profile,The problem is that it appears as if firefox is deliberately changing some of my selections to favor firefox preferences. it is when I change my preferences they are selectivly altered. I gave you the example of the prompt to set the browser to firefox when I open firefox browser . I set it to no. Why does the computer not retain my selection ? It could be a corrupted Profile. The Profile holds many things and Preferences is one of them. That is a Preference.

Please Refresh but do this 1st:

then

TEST....... If no issues then Extensions which need to be added back in 1 at a time and tested ..... Or it is your Profile : Make a new one and test ...:

If is your Profile :

Note: Any customization will revert back to default, you will also need to reinstall Extensions.

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

What specific setting(s) is this about? Is this about Preferences (about:preferences)?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

You can check for problems with preferences.

Delete possible user.js and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename/remove the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js and prefs that are no longer supported in current Firefox releases.

There is no indication that the user needs to actively save the page because experience appears to indicate it was not necessary as changed settings were stable.

My solution is to "save page as" from the File menu.

This produces a file "Preferences.xul" the contents of which is obeyed on boot up. I put the saved file the ~/.mozilla directory Note. The initial boot up time for firefox is quick on a new install but is much slower now possibly due to an accumulation of data in ~/.mozilla/extensions . At the moment there are 5 directories with dates going back to May 16 2013. What is the point of these files and why aren't they deleted.? Thanks for you interest and help.I hope my observations are of use. Cheers mark
