Increasing hangs on my firefox ("not responding", sometimes "unresponsive script"). Yesterday mozilla would not respond on my email, so i opted to close the session. What an error. I lost all my email, some of it business correspondence. Will i lose my Google account, email , and writing files or my Microsoft Word program or Internet Explorer if i do "reset"? I will wait for an answer before i do "reset." Thank you for your service. Sincerely.

This support article describes what the Refresh feature does: Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings.

But to address your specific questions:

Will i lose my ...

  • Google account: No. If Firefox forgets your Google password, you can log into your account and save it again.
  • email: No. Your email is not stored in Firefox, it either is stored on the mail service provider's website, or in a separate email program, or both.
  • writing files: I'm not sure what these are. If you are using an add-on to create/save those files, then it is possible that the files will be gone after a Refresh because the data associated with add-ons is removed. However, if you created these files in any other way, they should not be affected.
  • Microsoft Word program: No. A Firefox Refresh does not affect any Microsoft applications.
  • Internet Explorer: No. A Firefox Refresh does not affect any Microsoft applications.

I noticed you mentioned a "Reset". Windows has a Reset feature. I am only talking about Firefox's built in Refresh, and not the Windows Reset.

Could I add that the previous answer is based on having your profile folder, your personal Firefox settings folder, in the location selected by Firefox and not in a custom location. Most people do not change the location. However, if you have modified Firefox to save your profile folder in a custom location, when the Refresh removes that folder any other kind of data you have saved in that folder also will be removed. Again, that does not apply to most people.

Thanks...a lot. I think i'll do "refresh". I used the incorrect word. So i get from the answer that centurylink is responsible for my email and mozilla only delivers the data. However, likely mozilla "not responding" and my subsequent click on the option to leave the site is the reason for this morning's email box being void of mail. Is that correct? Just trying to understand what's happening here. thank you again for your kind service.

Sorry, I don't know why your email had a problem this morning. Do you want to try a little troubleshooting for that first?

When you have a problem with one particular site that was working normally before, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

(1) Clear Firefox's Cache

These are similar to Internet Explorer "Temporary Internet Files"

See: How to clear the Firefox cache

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.

(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, try either:

  • right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • (menu bar) Tools > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • click the padlock or globe icon in the address bar > More Information > "View Cookies"

In the dialog that opens, you can remove the site's cookies individually.

Then try reloading the page and logging in again. Does that help?

Thank you for all of your suggestions. I am going to refresh and then if i have further problems with the email centurylink account i will try the suggested clearing and cookies removal. Thank you for your assistance. I will let you know what works.

I did the refresh and so far everything seems faster. Time will tell. Meanwhile, everything worked just the way you said it would. I have yet to try the email suggestions. Thanks again.
