When I attempt to insert about:https://www.google.co.uk/ in the newtab modify string I get the message that this is not a proper URL.
The above is what happens when I follow the instructions about changing the newtab page. Also, supposedly a list of preferences should appear in the config mode but it doesn't. Also my options settings re tabs are very limited.

https://www.google.co.uk/ is all you need - not the about: . BTW, that preference / setting is going away in Firefox 41 which will be released tomorrow. You'll need an add-on to change the new tab URL in the future.
What types of "tab" settings are you looking for, beyond the 4 that are provided?

Thanks v much. But I note your warning that in future -- tomorrow! -- I'll need an add-on to do this. What add-on would that be?
