What happened to the "plus" tab to open a new tab?

more options

I like to be able to open a new page by clicking the "plus" sing to the right of the last used tab. Especially convenient when copying a URL and wish to paste it in a new address field. This leaves me only the option of writing over an existing open page.

I also miss the sidebar tab array (with t eh"+" as the last choice-- the app does not work with this update of Firefox (don't know which version because I don't know how to find out-- usually have "help" or "about" tab.

Can you tell I only switched back to FF from Chrome a couple of weeks ago and had been delighted with speed (after refreshing) and the particular features I am now finding to have been removed.

Hi Ken, although there is no tab shape around the +, it should be in the same old location next to the last tab and if you hover your mouse over it, a small tab shape should appear. If yours is not there, something is still customizing the tab bar.

Hi Ken, the "+" button to open a new tab definitely should be on your tab bar by default in Firefox 39.

It is possible to move it to a different bar, or completely off all bars, so you could look for it in the Customize mode. See: Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars. I'm also attaching a screen shot showing how it looks different on other bars.

What is the sidebar tabs add-on you're using? In case it is breaking things, could you try disabling or removing it?

Open the Customize window and set which toolbar items to display.

  • "3-bar" Firefox menu button > Customize
  • if a missing item is in the Customize palette then drag them back from the Customize window on the toolbar
  • if you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the Customize palette then click the Restore Defaults button to restore the default toolbar setup

Thank you, jscher2000 and cor-el for your help --

"What is the sidebar tabs add-on you're using? In case it is breaking things, could you try disabling or removing it?"

Its name was something like "list open tabs in sidebar" but I now cannot find it on the plugin/extension menus. When I upgraded to FF 39 I got an error message saying it was not supported so I presume it was not even installed. It was a very useful program as it arrayed all open tabs as a list in the left sidebar rather than on top, so it gave an excellent picture of tab status and helped me manage tabs and remember to close those I did not need. It also had "+" in the last space on the list to open a new tab.

Thank you for your suggestion. I did restore a tiny "+" sign in the upper right of the screen after I used the "Restore Defaults" but still do not automatically get an blank tab at the right of the open tabs in the tabs bar to make it easy to open a new page without over-writing one that is open, so that was a useful suggestion.

Is there any way to have Firefox go back to showing a new tab in the tab bar (i.e., just to the right of the last open tab) with just a "+" showing, all the time?

I found it. The name of the Extension is "Tab Sidebar" see:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/tab-sidebar/

"The tab sidebar extension, if you haven’t heard of it already, provides a sidebar in the browser that can act as a replacement to the main tab bar, complete with always visible preview thumbnails and in tab navigation buttons. Just got to View - Tab Sidebar to see it.

"Since Tab Sidebar provides a replacement for the main tab bar, when the sidebar is visible Firefox’s main tab bar will be hidden. If you still wish to use the main tab bar then you can show it again from the Tab Sidebar options."

This app has not been updated since 2009 and must be outdated. Is there any other add-on which does this same thing, as it was very useful.

Thanks, jscher.--

Although the "+" did not appear when I hovered over the space to the right of last tab, I saw that the "+" was actually located at the very far right end of the menu taskbar. I simply went into "Customize" and moved it to the left end of the other apps that were lined up far to the right.

Then I got out of "Customize" and moved it to the last tab or maybe just to the right of it. It "jumped" into the desired position just to the right of the last tab. Success!!
