I can not change plug in settings to "ask to activate", it is grayed out for all of them, what can I do?

You can check this pref on the about:config page and make sure it is true (default).
- plugins.click_to_play = true
You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac Options) key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?
