I keep getting a pop up window to update Firefox, but it wants to disable security features on my computer. I don't like this. is it legitimate?

I just want to know if this is safe to do. I don't like that it wants to disable my virus and security software.

It is probably talking about extensions which were installed by a security suite - extensions which weren't updated yet for the newer version of Firefox - extensions which may duplicate features that are already built into Firefox.

Which security suite or anti-virus does the update affect?

hello MaryDee, it appears that you are using an old firefox version (30) and would indeed need to update. however i've never seen that a genuine firefox would ask you to disable security features, so this is indeed suspicious.

you could download the full installer of the current firefox version for your language from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ and install it on top of your current setup which will keep all your personal data and customizations.

finally run a full scan of your system with different security tools like the free version of malwarebytes and adwcleaner to make sure that some form of malware isn't present in other places of your system.

If by security features you mean the phony extensions your antivirus installs into Firefox, this is fine. Those extensions just need to be updated and they will work in the new Firefox. Staying on an old version of Firefox actually leaves you more insecure than disabling those add-ons (which do next to nothing to improve your security).

You should update to Firefox 33.1.1 ASAP.

First of all, try to re download & reinstall the latest Firefox. Get it from Get Firefox now. It will fix most problems. Also, can you post some screenshots of that dialog box, which asks you to update Firefox. To create screenshot:Windows 7 > Start>Type Snipping Tool & select the down arrow near New & click Window Snip & then click on that dialog box.

Thanks, I appreciate you and everyone else answering me.

Here are the things it says will be affected. Judging by these responses, I shouldn't worry about this, but I want to be sure.

I am not sure what "safe money" is and why it's on there. Something new from Kasp. I think.

It says:

Kaspersky URL Advisor Dangerous Website Blocker Safe Money

The message says these will be deactivated until they become compatible.

Thanks again!

Safe Money is a feature of your Kaspersky antivirus is an outdated Firefox plugin, don't worry, it will be activated when it will be updated for Firefox 33. You can search the web on how to update this plugin or click on Firefox Menu (hamburger button)>>Add-ons>>wrench menu(near addon search bar)>>check for updates. I personally never used Kaspersky, so I don't know much about it.

MaryDee,

The best thing to do is to update Firefox and let those [virtually unnecessary] Kaspersky add-ons be disabled. Then when it comes time to renew with Kaspersky, install a different Security Suite that has a better track record of timely updates. IMO, almost anything else is better than Kaspersky in that regard.

This isn't a recommendation, by any means, but AVG and Norton both are a lot better at keeping their stuff up-to-date than Kaspersky has been over the last couple of years.

Personally I use Avira! Free [for personal use] - mainly because it doesn't install any silly little extensions for Firefox; most of which duplicate / replace features that are already in Firefox.
