My e-mails keep dissapearing

My e-mails keep disappearing. They are not in the trash. It is as if Thunderbird automatically deletes them. Just then I had around 30 messages in the inbox then I received some new messages and there were only three messages in the inbox being the ones I had just received. This has happened a few times now and it is starting to happen more frequently.
