We're sorry to hear that your Firefox seems to be crashing when you open it. Please perform the following steps to give us a crash report ID that helps us find out more about the cause of the crash.

  1. Press the following shortcut to get a Run window: [Windows] + [R]. This should bring up a window that contains a text field.
  2. In that text field, enter %APPDATA% and press Enter. An explorer window should open.
  3. From that explorer window, double-click on the Mozilla folder, then double-click on Firefox and then on Crash reports. Double-click on submitted.
  4. Now, you should see a list of files that contain reports. Go to View > Arrange Icons by > Modified to get the most recent files at the top of the window.
  5. Open the most recent 5 files with a text editor and copy the IDs.
  6. Paste each ID with bp- into the reply window on the forums.

Thanks in advance!

You can find more information and troubleshooting steps in the Troubleshoot Firefox crashes (closing or quitting unexpectedly) article.

Does this affect internal pages as well? For example, if you use the Windows 7 start menu search box to launch new Firefox windows as follows, do they stay open?

firefox.exe "about:blank"
firefox.exe "about:home"
firefox.exe "about:newtab"

Is it possible you have any malware on your system? Some malware tries to block all third party browsers. This support article has suggestions on free scanning tools: Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.

bp- 1381857349 ("LastCrash") bp- 1381855908 ("InstallTime")

(There only these two files under "Crash Reports".)

Hi HarveyB, in order to access the crash data, we would need the whole crash ID.

Numbers like 1381857349 are date/time strings (in this case: Tue, 15 Oct 2013 17:15:49 GMT) and not a crash ID.
A crash ID looks like this:

  • bp-xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx

The string of numbers that I sent was the only content in the one crash report that I found at the location that you specified (despite there having occurred numerous crashes).

In the meantime, I have (I) found that Firefox works in Windows (7) safe mode, and (ii) run all the suggested malware tools, and rebooted. The only improvement seems to be that a little more time elapses before Firefox crashes.

I appreciate your continuing efforts!

If it works in Windows Safe mode then you have a problem with other software, possibly security software or a system driver, that is running on your computer.

You can use the MSConfig program or the Autoruns utility to see which software and services are getting started (be cautious with disabling services).

I recently began to experience this same problem. There are many, many reports of this same trouble all over the web. Why is it that when so many people report having the same problem tech support asks each user to perform trouble shooting. The firefox team should instead look for the fault within the firefox program.

Hi pjl112, the reason for asking about your system, asking about your crash reports, and proposing that you disable certain advanced features, is that every system is different and the cause of crashes ranges from malware tampering with Firefox in memory to Firefox choking on the code of some websites. In order to address your specific problem, more information is needed.

When Firefox crashes, it usually records information about what was happening at that moment. You can submit that data to Mozilla and share it with forum volunteers to see whether it points to the solution. Please check the support article "Firefox Crashes" (especially the last section) for steps to get those crash IDs, and then post some of the recent ones here.

If that's not possible, have you tried Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to bypass interference by extensions (and some custom settings). More info: Use Troubleshoot Mode in Firefox.

You can start Firefox in Safe Mode by holding down the Shift key when starting Firefox.

In the small dialog that should appear, click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Reset)

Will Firefox get to the home page and beyond in Safe Mode? If so, we could suggest various next steps based on that information. If it's just as bad, that would be good to know as well.

To ensure that your crashes get individualized attention, could you start a new question at this following link: https://support.mozilla.org/questions.../fix-problems. The site will suggest help articles; scroll down past the suggestions to continue with the form (I think it has 3 different screens).
