Hello,
Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.
You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
Then perform these steps:
- Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
- In the Firefox options window click the Advanced tab, then select "General".
- In the settings list, you should find the Use hardware acceleration when available checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
- Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.
Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!
Thank you.
Tried safe mode- still happened Disabled extentions, hardware acceleration, -still there Graphics drivers updated - still freezes when I click on the bookmark icon only.
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox, you will not lose Bookmarks and history.
Please follow these steps:
Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
- Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
- After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
- Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
- C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
- C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
- Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
- Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
- Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
Please report back to see if this helped you!
After reinstalling- still the same problem
You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder.

I have the same problem but fortunately it hasn't reached the stage of a 2 minute hang. Since V.22 update there has been a hang on accessing bookmarks of about 7seconds. Not critical but very, very annoying.
I use the menu bar and have no hang on accessing tools, history, Help, View etc - only bookmarks.
I have reset Firefox, removed all bookmarks, add ons etc but as soon as I have a couple of bookmarks to work from the problem occurs.

I think I saw a bug filed and fixed about bookmarks manager freezing, not sure where its at now, but can you try the beta version of firefox and see if its freezing?
This has been an on and off problem for years. It just hit me again today - no update or change - but now I can't use Bookmarks without risking hanging all my browser windows for who-knows how-long.
Is there an external program that can be used to organize bookmarks? If necessary, I'll just keep it open on the side, and drag-drop them into FF.
Thanks for any suggestions.
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Creating a profile":
- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues
If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.
Maybe it is best to try to restore the bookmarks from a JSON backup.
