Thunderbird sometimes misses emails in the Gmail account

I notice some emails are in my gmail account, but Thunderbird has not picked them up? what could be the reason? and is there a way to get them onto the TB folders?

Check to see what folders they are in. Then, rightclick on account in left pane and click 'subscribe' to the folders.

I am not sure I understand this. They are in the Inbox folder both in my TB as well gmail, neither of which have the subscribe option

i also get the following error quite frequently. see attachment. the directory or file is only accessed by TB
