Cannot send messages from Thunderbird

I receive messages from imap.gmail.com in Thunderbird 45.4.0 but cannot send messages from Thunderbird. I am getting a message that connection timed out. I tried to turn off anti-virus software and firewall. Sending messages keeps timing out.
