Or, when it thinks an email is spam, how do I tell it that the email is not spam?

Thunderbird does not use the word spam. It has junk control that let you tag messages as Junk.

OK, I get a red bar across the body of an email. It says "This message may be a scam." I'm giving a box to select "Options". The options are: "Ignore warning for this message." and "Edit scam detection options". When I click on the edit option I get the window with 8 selections, General, Display, Composition, Chat, Privacy, Security, Attachments and Advanced. Nowhere in any of these do I see a way to tell Thunderbird that this message is not a scam or junk.

As far as I can see the only option is to turn scam detection on or off.

I'll give it a try and see what else gets through.

Would it be possible for Thunderbird to build a database of email addresses that were detected as possible scams that I would mark as OK? Then messages from the same email address would sail right through.

You can request options but if they get developed would be the question.
