Drag and Drop attachments to the desktop stopped working again with Thunderbird 145. Steps to reproduce: You receive a mail with an attachment. You drag an attached file from this message and drop it onto the desktop of your Mac to download it. The attached file is not saved to the desktop (or any other folder I tried). This is on MacOS 26.1 MacMini M4. Please fix asap.

re :Thunderbird 145. That means you are using the 'Thunderbird Release' channel as it is currently offering version 145.0 It is the official 'monthly release'. This release is intended for users who want all available new features and bug fixes on a monthly basis.

There is also the 'Thunderbird Extended Support Release' channel currently offering the 140.5.0esr It is the official annual extended support release. This release is intended for users who want all available new features on an annual basis and stability/security fixes on a monthly basis. So you do not get all the new features so quickly, just the security and bug fixes.

That means you have chosen to use a product which offers all the newest features, some you may like, others may not be so important. But it does mean you may be using addons that are not as up to date. After all they are not Thunderbird employees, they are just users like you and me who created an addon and offer it to others who hopefully would offer a donation to help maintain it.

It would be helpful to know if you use any addons and if yes, the name of those addons.

You can find a quick list to copy and paste here:

  • Help > TRoubleshooting Information
  • scroll down to 'Add-ons' section
  • Either post an image or use copy paste to post info.

Have you performed the basic test by restarting Thunderbird in Troubleshoot Mode? If no, then please do this first and then try to drag and drop an attachment to desktop. Please report on results.

I am assuming that you have fully downloaded the email and the attachment. Do you use IMAP or POP account ? Are you using an any addons such as Conversations ?

Thanks for the letter. I'm just a user, updating. I don't know what version it is or what's included, and I shouldn't know anyway. If there's an update, I should probably trust the authors and update it. I tried it in troubleshooting mode, but it didn't improve anything. I don't use IMAP or Conversion. I disabled all add-ons, but nothing changed.

re : I don't know what version it is

How to find out what version you are currently using: In Thunderbird

  • Help > About Thunderbird

OR

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • Under 'Application Basics' it will tell you 'Version'

OR

  • Settings > General
  • scroll down to the 'Updates' section.

You can set up Thunderbird to check for updates but not update until you allow it.

  • Settings > General
  • Scroll to 'Updates' section
  • select: 'Check for updates, but let me choose whether to install them.

Then in Help > About Thunderbird It will tell you the version you are using and ask if you want to update the new version which it will also tell you.

You can always check what is included in an update via:

That means if you use any add-ons you can then check to see if the addon is capable of working on the update version.

re :I shouldn't know anyway

You would need to know it if you were to ask any question. Any question you ask should always include basic information about the set up as the instructions you may require will vary depending upon your OS and version.

re: Drag and Drop I'm using Windows 11 and tested in beta 146.0b2 I am able to drag and drop an attachment onto the desktop.

However, do you download full copies of emails? Are you using IMAP or POP ? Are your Thunderbird profiles stored in the default location? Did you get Thunderbird from the official webpage download or via Windows App Store or Snap or Flatpak ?

I know about updates, but I believe that if updates are released, the people who make them are doing so to improve features and improve security, not to break other things. I already wrote that I have MAC OS, Tahoe 26.1, IMAP, and version 145.0 of thunderbird.I'm trying to drag and drop not a letter, but an attachment.

Thanks Wayne. It's really good to hear that the developers were onto this bug very quick and that a fix is due very soon. It also seems this bug was very specific effecting MAC OS but did not manifest in Windows OS.
