I have other issues with Thunderbird as well, but I seem to have lost the 'button' to click on to create a new message as well as other issues.

Thunderbird buttons reside on toolbars. You turn the toolbars on and off from the View menu. If you are missing the menu bar with the View menu button press the alt key to make it appear. Then select View-Toolbars and turn your missing toolbars back on. Write is on the Mail toolbar.
