Internet Explorer has failed on my wife's computer, so she is unable to search the net for an alternative browser. Can I save a copy of Firefox on this my computer and transfer it onto her computer?

Yes, you can download the Firefox installer from here: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox. You can copy the downloaded installer to your wife's computer and install it there.
