Address bar doesn't show search engine URL even when about:config edited

On Firefox beta for android. I prefer my address bar to show my search URL when searching. Instead it just shows my search terms, so "test" rather than google.com/q=test or something like that. I've tried editing the relevant about: config settings and this worked for a few moments but now doesn't have an effect. Anything I can do about this, as for me this is an essential feature? Cheers
