You are not the only one, but I feel a little that way about the original question as well. Thunderbird is a program installed on your computer storing most if not all of it's data also on your computer. So answering such a question is like answering the question how long is a piece of string.

I have no idea why. There are many many variables. if the account is IMAP the reasons a usually different to is the account is pop. What anti virus you use and how you have it configured is also relevant. Especially if all the mail before a certain date is missing after you repair the folder by right clicking the folder and selecting properties and then the repair button.
