How to delete a selected block (not the entire file) of email messages in the 'send' and 'trash' files?

I like to keep 'sent' emails for 3 months and 'trash' items for 2 months, so knowing how to delete selected blocks (other then one at a time using the delete button) will be very helpful to me. Thank you.
