Why does Firefox hang often when switching tabs or attempting to type a URL?

When switching tabs or attempting to type a URL, often, but not every time, Firefox hangs. I've grown tired of waiting for it to respond again so I keep my task manager minimized to force the process to close when this occurs. Note: I do NOT have Spybot so that is not the problem.

Start Firefox in Use Troubleshoot Mode in Firefox to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
