Why was an unremovable "Extensions" menu added to my toolbar?

I would like to be able to remove this from my toolbar but cannot which is inconsistent to how customizing the toolbar normally functions.

Chosen solution

For now you can remove this Extension button via the about:config page

  • about:config => extensions.unifiedExtensions.enabled = false
  • /questions/1392865 Remove Extension Icon from Tool Bar

Note that is isn't guaranteed that this pref will be available once this feature has been completed, so best is not to use this pref to hide this icon.

EDIT: You will need this Extensions button in the future if you start using Manifest V3 extensions as this button is used to manage the permissions for MV3 extensions. More info about the Extensions button:

Hi

Thank you for helping test Firefox in the pre-Release channels. What you are seeing is a feature that is still being worked on and is still being polished further to a possible wider release.

The people who answer questions here, for the most part, are other users volunteering their time (like me), not Mozilla employees or developers. If you want to leave feedback for developers, you can go to the Firefox Help menu and select either Share ideas and feedback… or Submit feedback…, depending on your Firefox version. Alternatively, you can use this link. Your feedback gets collected by a team of people who read it and gather data about the most common issues.

You can also file a bug report or feature request. See File a bug report or feature request for Mozilla products for details.

Do NOT remove this option from Firefox. If devs continue on this path, I'll go elsewhere. Will this dumbing down of the interface ever going to end?

Now Firefox does not respect the about:config flag and this is un-removable. Kinda frustrating as I had my overflow menu organized with relevant extensions instead of having them all in a list I cannot filter, sort, or order.

This is apparently by design and is explained towards the bottom of this official article article.

If anyone finds this and is dissatisfied as shared by Paul in an earlier reply you can and should use this link this link to send feedback.

The worst part for me is that there is no way to hide extensions from this menu yet. Why remove a fully working feature, making it also inaccessible via flags now, and replace it with an incomplete one? I don't need to see React Developer Tools always taking up space in this menu, or ClearURLs, or Plasma Integration, or Facebook Container... And the list goes on. Even extensions that don't provide a view panel, such as Image search options, BetterTTV, Save webp as PNG cannot be hidden.

Edit: Someone opened an idea for this over at Mozilla Connect.

I registered a mozilla account solely to cuss them out for this nonsense. The button must be moveable at minimum, because IT DOESN'T GO THERE.

Starting with Firefox version 113, due out May 9, you will be able to move the Extensions button (puzzle-piece icon) to a different position on the main toolbar. This is mentioned in the "Common questions" section of the Manage your extensions using the extensions button in the toolbar article.
