Why does Firefox's PDF image based signatures get "mangled"?

Something happens to the edge definition and visual artifacts are introduced to signatures added via images to Firefox to sign documents. I've tested both .jpg and .png image signatures and regardless of source file format, these artifacts and edge definition gets mangled.
