Instead of tabs appearing, the latest screen completely obscures the previous one

I open firefox. Homepage is there. I open a new page. A new screen appears which completely obliterates the former screen. As if I had just opened the internet. With the next page I go to, it is the same. Previous screens masked. And so on, and so on. Instead of separate tabs appearing at the top of the initial page

You can disable that option for a bit, and enable it back after restarting to see if it gets picked up then.

You can also try restarting into Troubleshoot Mode (from Help menu) to verify it's not caused by some addon and still exhibits the same even in that mode.

Does it sound like some links you follow open whole new windows, whereas you'd expect them to create just tabs inside the same window instead?

That is the default, but you might have changed a preference in the past — see Tab preferences and settings for guidance where to go and what to look for, you want to make sure "Open links in tabs instead of new windows" is enabled for you.

jbr, your response exactly describes my problem ! Unfortunately, when I go to Tab preferences and settings, Open liks in tabs instead of new windows is already ticked.  :-(
