Firefox will restore your previous session if it perceives that it did not shut down normally (for example, if it crashed). Quitting Firefox using the menu -- either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > Exit
  • (menu bar or Alt+F) File > Exit

-- may help Firefox shut down properly and recognize that there wasn't a crash.

Three other notes:

(1) It is possible to save numerous page as your home page. You can check that setting to make sure that didn't happen: How to set the home page.

(2) Firefox will restore pinned (icon only) tabs even if it doesn't restore the rest of your previous session. More info on those: Pinned Tabs - keep favorite websites open and just a click away.

(3) Occasionally, the problem of unwanted restoration is caused by an optional file named user.js. If you have a user.js file, it should be mentioned on the Troubleshoot Information page. See: Use the Troubleshooting Information page to help fix Firefox issues (you can Ctrl+F search for user.js after opening the page).
