Hello! I want my address bar to be simply that - an address bar. I do not want to search from it, I do not want to run commands from it, I do not want to run shortcuts from it. I just want it to take me to that address - and if that address is not valid or available, I do not want suggestions or options. Just an address bar, nothing else. Is this possible? Thanks! -Doug

Hi Doug, yes, it is possible, but you need to make a change under the covers:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.

More info on about:config: Configuration Editor for Firefox. The moderators would like us to remind you that changes made through this back door aren't fully supported and aren't guaranteed to continue working in the future.

(2) In the search box in the page, type or paste keyword.enabled and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the preference to switch the value from true to false

That will prevent searching your URLs. If you ever need to send a search to your default search site, start your text with a question mark to enable a one-off search.

Now... if submitting some nonsense doesn't give you an internal Firefox error page, most likely your DNS service provider (typically your home ISP) is monetizing the DNS lookup fail. These search results pages of pay-per-click ads often have an opt-out to turn that off (the link might say "Why am I getting this page"). You also could increase your DNS over HTTPS level to bypass any local domain resolution (Configure DNS over HTTPS protection levels in Firefox).
