Once again, Mozilla has changed a good thing. I like searching from the middle of the page because I can actually see it and never use the address bar to search. Now with the latest downgrade, I can no longer use the search bar in the center of the page, it sits there with no use or purpose. I can only search from the address bar. I tried the fix of going to about:config, then handoff, then browser.newtabpage,activity............followed the directions exactly. IT DID NOT WORK. Someone needs to help fix this or I will dump mozilla as they continue to ignore functions that are PERFECT and change them to accommodate a group of people that live on their phones and make all changes preferential to that genre. I use a desk top to access the internet. Do not forget about PC users when you make these asinine changes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Setting browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.improvesearch.handoffToAwesomebar = false on the about:config page should work to prevent Firefox from using the location bar.

Did you close and restart Firefox ?

Note that you are behind on updates as current is Firefox 94.0.1.

Yahoo Mail Sent Re: cor-el posted an answer to your question "remove searches from address bar, restore search to middle of the page" Nov 15 at 10:43 AM To: no-reply@mozilla.org God how I hate when you send something this important both from a no reply email AND with incomplete information. Is step one: type --------about:config ? Is step two ----------click button to accept the risk? Is step three-----to type browser.newtabpage.activity-.........=false?

You have wrongly assumed that I can read you mind and can see whether or not you have left out steps in the sketchy email you sent.

I am aware that I have not updated. EVERY SINGLE TIME I UPDATE WITH MOZILLA, I HAVE PERFORMANCE OR SITE ISSUES. NOT WORTH THE HASSLE JUST LIKE THIS HAS BECOME.

If I wanted a robot to reply I would have not bothered.

If any human out there has the exact step by step directions on how to move all "searches" back to the middle of the page like they used to be,(and off of automatically being done via the address bar) I would appreciate a step by step response. I already tried 1 typed--about:config 2 clicking the button to accept the risk 3 typed--handoff 4 double-clicked on: thebrowser.newtabpage.activity-stream.improvesearch.handoffToAwesomebar preference and switched the value from true to false. 5. Restarted my computer. THIS PROCESS DID NOTHING. Searches are still only available via the address bar. Mozilla needs to fix this process, every single time I update I have issues with some process. I usually do not update for months at a time due to the aggravation of tying to get help fixing the mess they have made of the simple functions that should not have been messed with in the first place.

Still works for me.

Start Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration or userChrome.css is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Troubleshoot Mode start window
