Summary: On windows 10, getting error messages on websites including big names like logitech.com after firefox updates from 84.0 to 85.0. Reinstall of 84.0 and sites work again. Other major browsers also work fine.

Specific error message is: Secure Connection Failed" "An error occurred during a connection to ***websitehere***. PR_END_OF_FILE_ERROR." "The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because the authenticity of the received data could not be verified."

Troubleshooting: - I did an uninstall on the machine and deleted all mozilla folders from program files / app data followed by a fresh install of firefox 85.0 on machine, didn't help. - I uninstalled firefox again and wiped folders then installed 84.0 and turned off updates. All websites work fine. After auto update to 85.0, sites don't work again. - Cleared cache/history/etc and even created a new profile. Nothing helps. - Doesn't happen on all machines I don't think but is starting to appear on several and that number has been increasing over the last 2 days. I haven't looked to see if I could find someone's machine that has 85.0 and is working besides mine yet.

Side note: - I received a replacement laptop on Wednesday for work and did all windows updates prior to installing any programs, domain join, etc. As part of the program loadout I install, firefox is included in that list. I installed 85 available from the website and logitech.com works fine.

Ending comment: - Appears to be some kind of issue that happens right after firefox does it's update and whatever the root cause is sticks behind after an uninstall and deletion of all the folders. Maybe something in the registry?

With how many computers this is starting to show up on now, it would appear that this should be noticed by others and I wanted to reach out and make sure Mozilla is aware.

radi.stoyanov said Turns out the option DNS over HTTPS is what caused the problem.

jamesafuf123 said https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1264659#answer-1237475 my ISP was blocking sites like that

cor-el said This usually means that Firefox wasn't able to find a cipher suites to use to connect to this server and reached the end of the list. There can be two possibilities: one is that the server is outdated and doesn't support modern cipher suites, another might be that the server only supports a few cipher suites and Firefox doesn't support any of these.

You can check your browser and possibly compare this with the server setup.

I did an internet search before posting here. DNS over HTTPS is disabled. I can uninstall 85.0 and reinstall 84.0 and it works fine in 84... until the auto update kicks in and updates them to 85.0.

More machines are impacted every day, one couldn't even open facebook this morning... so I tried the one that can't open logitech.com and it can't open facebook.com either.

They all seem to be specific to the same certain sites when it wiggs out.

Sorry, current forum security sometimes delays the posting of messages. And in turn, we are not notified of those posts.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link}

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

Thanks for the reply.

I will try when the user is available for me to mess with their machine again in a little bit and let you know.

In the meantime, shouldn't the uninstallation of the program and deleting of all folders remove all extensions?

I just compared https://clienttest.ssllabs.com:8443/ssltest/viewMyClient.html between my version 85.0 that will load facebook and logitech against the user's 85.0 that won't load either and they are identical.

I restarted firefox in safe mode, neither site will load.

Have additional suggestions? If I uninstall it right now and install 84.0 it will load the page just fine. I'm stumped.

Well I think I figured it out finally. I uninstalled Sophos (just to make sure even though I had tested with everything turned off). After uninstall, I got this error: PR_CONNECT_RESET_ERROR instead of the original one.

Quick internet search landed me here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1281781

This phrase on the post tempted me to dig further into a connection problem/block: "PR_CONNECT_RESET_ERROR indicates that the destination server or a server along the way sent a RST to Firefox to terminate the attempted connection"

We run Cisco Firepower.. I logged in to go poke around to see if it was blocking connections. I noticed that "Ultrasurf" was now the #1 "Risky Applications with Low Business Relevance".. usually it's Facebook :P

I had Ultrasurf blocked because we don't want filter avoidance/personal VPN on our company network. (Just hit up an internet search and I'm sure you will understand why).

As soon as I removed the block for Ultrasurf and deployed to a test device, firefox is loading all pages again on the troubled machine there.

I've deployed it to production devices and it resolved issue for the moment (I'd call it a workaround, not a fix)..

Now to figure out who's at fault for Firefox showing up to internet filters / monitoring as Ultrasurf? What did they implement/change between firefox 84 and 85 that caused it?

Hmmm. Is there a way to submit a "bug"?
