You are apparently using a Windows XP Desktop computer. Your friend may be using a similar computer or something different including some sort of smartphone.
If the person is using Facebook Messenger you may not be able to use that on a Windows XP desktop computer, but that does not stop you using Facebook. Happy112 has already given you some links here are some others you may find useful.
- See wikipedia.org/wiki/Facebook_Messenger
- Note there is a Firefox Add-on Messenger for Facebook™ 48.2
If you are needing help in signing up with Facebook for the first time have a look at
- The Facebook help Page How do I sign up for Facebook?
- Then Finding Friends
If you have already got over those hurdles and it is some other problem maybe the Firefox Help article is what you need
If you are new to Firefox here are some introductory articles and information pages
