The option in <Tools/Options> to show my windows and tabs from last time has suddenly stopped working and all tabs are deleted when Firefox is re-opened.

For some unknown reason this option has died. I have not changed anything and checked that the setting is correct. How do i get it working again. I work across a number of tabs at a time and have now lost a session and cannot recall all the websites concerned.

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in (permanent) Private Browsing mode (Never Remember History).

  • Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history"
  • Deselect: [ ] "Always use private browsing mode"

In case you are using "Clear history when Firefox closes":

  • do not clear the Browsing History

Note that clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, and passwords.

Hi cor-el

Cannot get it right. I reinstalled v24.

My settings (options) are

General: "Show my windows and tabs from last time"

Privacy: "Tell sites that I do not want to be tracked" Firefox will: "Remember history" If i set it to "Use custom settings for history" then the "Always use private browsing mode" box is unticked. The other 3 boxes there are all ticked. The "Clear history when Firefox closes" box is unticked.

So i am still stumped.

Thanks for responding.

By the way i am now receiving this message when i Close the session. "? You are about to close 2 tabs. Are you sure you want to continue"

Hi johnc48, how do you close your session? If you right-click the Firefox icon on the Windows Task Bar, Firefox closes each window individually. To ensure that you do not lose those windows from your session, use Exit instead:

  • orange Firefox button > Exit or
  • File menu > Exit

Note that after resuming a session, up to 3 closed windows can be recovered from the History menu > Recently Closed Windows list. This is the default value and can be increased. See: Problems with windows in FF.

You can check the browser.sessionstore.* prefs on the about:config page and reset user set (bold) browser.sessionstore.*prefs to the default value via the right-click context menu to make sure that Session Restore is enabled and working properly.

You can check for problems with the sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak files in the Firefox profile folder that store session data.

Delete the sessionstore.js file and possible sessionstore-##.js files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox profile folder.

Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost and you will have to recreate them (make a note or bookmark them if possible).
