I have a laptop running Firefox 5.0 on Windows 7 and don't have problem with it.

What I suggest you do in the first instance is to start Windows 7 using the Last Known Good Configuration which will load the operating system the last time it worked properly, instructions here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Using-Last-Known-Good-Configuration

Then do the following.

  1. Use Internet Explorer to download Firefox from here: Download Firefox 5.0.1 and choose "Save" when you see the prompt and save it to your desktop. Do not choose "Run".

  2. Next, uninstall the version you have at the moment via "Programs and Features" in Control Panel choosing to keep your bookmarks, customizations etc., (don't checkmark the box).

  3. Next, reboot.

  4. When the system boots to the desktop, delete the folder called "Mozilla Firefox" at this location: C:\Program Files\

  5. Run the installation file you downloaded earlier.

Your bookmarks, customizations etc., are maintained in a different location and will become available to you again once you complete the installation.

I don't know if your bookmarks can be retrieved or not, but the following procedure can be used to make a backup should they still be available.

  1. Press CTRL+SHIFT+B to open the Bookmarks manager.

  2. Click the link to Import and Backup and then click Export HTML and save the file somewhere.

You can use the same Bookmarks Manager to import the file you saved by choosing "Import HTML" should that prove to be necessary.
