updating from Thunderbird v8.0 to v91.xx ??

I recently started using Thunderbird again. It's been a while and I find that I am using version v8.0 and TBird is now at v.91.xx. (I have to say that TBird v8.0 is a lot better than the other up-to-date software I have been struggling with!!)

I am not sure whether I can update. It looks unlikely (Tbird reports that my software is "up-to-date" so I think I have lost touch with the mothership). In one location, I noticed a dropdown menu with Tbird v11.0 showing as the earliest selectable version.

If I can't update, could I download the program and start afresh, migrating my (many) folders and many years of emails ... which I value.

Thanks for any help, every question I posed to the knowledge database came back with no appropriate answer. .. I need a human being's assistance!

It is dangerous to update directly to version 91 from such old version. But you can update in a few steps. See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1310757
