When I shut my computer down and turn it back on Firefox is no longer on my desktop and I have to go into downloads and open again. I have a MacBook Pro, with Safari as a web browser. Mac OSX 10.7.5.

I suspect that you didn't actually "install" Firefox. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-download-and-install-firefox-mac
