How can one close list of bookmarks without closing Firefox or shutting down computer? Using Firefox for Mac, version 430.4 and OS version 10.11.1.

You can close the window via Command+W.

Try to rename (or delete) the xulstore.json file in the Firefox profile folder.

You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:
