Thunderbird is looking for a mail account on a mail server. Have you checked your firewall setting that appropriate mail ports are open? 

What are you trying to do, really.  the first half of your question relates to mail already downloaded.

Thanks for your poke, Matt... It pushed me a bit to search for more information. Apparently, it seems I installed at the time email-handling with a "postfix" configuration. So, the question was, how can I read messages (which came in long ago) properly with thunderbird?
