I am a recent adopter of TB running v.31.2.0 OS is: Yosemite OSX 10.10 The server I am connected to is an IMAP (Outlook) account (The Outlook account is aslo connected with ios 8 mail on an iphone 5s)

Nearly every time I open TB from closed, it re-downloads all the contents of my inbox and sent folders (1-2000 emails) This can take several hours or only 20 mins depending on the wireless network I am connected to at the time.

While the downloading is taking place TB is slow in operation and I am unable to open emails more than viewing their headers, if they can be accessed at all.

Sometimes the bar at the window base also displays wildly inaccurate downloading information. ie; 'downloading 3 of 2' or '310 of 1000 new messages' when I know through my phone that no such quantity has been received.

I have tried 'downloading for offline use' however this has produced a slower interface overall and has not fully downloaded across all 'inbox' folders or 'sent'. Restarting TB still leads to re downloading of emails although they should be stored offline now.

I would ideally like to be able to maintain a full record of my outlook account as it is online, within parallel folders that have been automatically set up by TB during set up. Then TB would only need to download individual emails as they arrive for permanent storage on my macbook as well as syncing with activities undertaken in outlook via ios 8 mail. I do not want to have to redownload and sync all mail every time I close TB, restart the OS or change Wi-Fi server.

I can provide screenshots and further info of my TB settings if required.

Many thanks and I look forward to your assistance.

I had this problem as well. I don't know the cause but I found a way to stop it.

I have several mail accounts and I like to use the combined boxes views. However, before erasing any email, i click on the individual accounts inbox and then go back to the combined inbox and can erase whatever i want.

If i erase it from the combined inbox without having clicked before on each of the acount that contains new mail, either it does not erase, crashes or redownload a little later.

Thank you for your response Petille.

Your answer unfortunately does not solve my problem as I only have a single mail client that my TB connects to and I therefore do not use the combined boxes view.

It does not seem like we are experiencing the same issues with the software.

I wonder if your both experiencing the side effects of the rampant and uncontrollable use of connections by IOS. Try turning your phone off and see if Thunderbird works as it should.

Thunderbird has a limit of up to 5 connections to a mail server. IOS has no limit. it will continue to grab connections until they are exhausted. In Thunderbird you can limit connections in account settings > server settings > advanced. In IOS you stuck with what Apple gives you.
