Some programs that are installed on Windows operating systems are coded to open IE, and there's nothing the average user can do to change it.

You say that some websites are opening in IE; how are you opening those websites? It may not be a problem with the "default browser" setting. From a desktop shortcut? Or, from a bookmark in Firefox?
