First I set my home page to yahoo, then when I close the browser and reopen it, the home page reverts to: http://search.bearshare.com/.

No matter how many times I reset it to something else, it always reverts to this website. I have removed this application (bearshare) from my PC, but to no avail.

Use Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode, do not make changes initially when the first window opens, just use the 'continue' button. reset your homepage whilst in safe mode. That may work.
