Gmail archive folder
How can I set up a local folder on my smart phone to archive (move message into) messages from Gmail inbox? Thanks - jankom

New folders should be created using gmail's web-mail in the browser. Creating them directly in Thunderbird for Android is not supported.
Once created, they will be available in Thunderbird for Android after refreshing its folder list.
To do this ...
- Open the side menu with your gmail folders displayed.
- Tap manage folders (bottom of the list).
- Tap the three dot ፧ menu > refresh folders.
Folder creation is a feature requested by the community of Mozilla connect. You can show support by voting for this at the link below.

Thank you Platform34 for the quick answer. Sorry, but it looks like my question was not precise. I did not mean to create and store some messages in an IMAP folder.
What I meant was to download and store messages in my local computer ("device" in smart-phone terminology).
An email client in a computer (linux), such as Evolution, can create a complete email-file-structure to "archive". i.e. download messages from Google's IMAP server, and organize it as I wish locally. Granted, those emails will not be accessible on any other device but on the device it was archived, and not in my gmail account.
But it's OK. The gmail account of my wife is near the 16G limit, and she only uses smart phone ("apps"). I was looking for a way to clear up that account while preserving messages at home (not "cloud").
Thanks again, jankom (Janos)
I may be misunderstanding. What your asking sounds like a pop3 account configuration where emails are stored locally on the device rather than the server.
TB does allow pop3 connections however it doesn't support local folder creation so you would have no means to move emails from inbox to an organised archive folder. The app also doesn't support backing up or exporting locally stored pop3 emails.
Your best option would be to archive the emails on a PC. A client such as Thunderbird desktop can download your emails over pop3, allowing them to be stored and archived locally on your computer.
