Mozila won't import my bookmarks

more options

Hello

So a funny story happened today, I used CC cleaner to help clean my PC now I have it set up so it does not touch Mozilla in anyway yet after an update those settings got wiped and when I used the program it wiped out everything I had in Mozilla, history, saved passwords, tabs, EVERYTHING.

The last time I made a backup to my bookmarks was 6 months ago, a lot has changed since then, I tried to use the restore function however those also got wiped out, so I decided to use the old bookmarks, yet it doesn't work, for some reason it tells me that it doesn't have any bookmark data in the file yet Chrome can read and import the bookmarks from the file, if I try importing stuff from Chrome it also comes up empty, as an experiment I made a new export from Mozilla and tried to import it and got the same error. I still have 2 bookmarks and those can't be deleted no matter what I do, I kept trying to delete them however they are stuck there no matter what I try. This laptop is a new one I got on the cheap after my laptop had a problem with it's hard drive, I made the backup right before the switch.

Does anyone have any ideas about what exactly happened and keeps happening?

Uninstalling Firefox and then reinstalling it might resolve this issue. It's likely that some critical files of Firefox have been deleted.

Hmm, it doesn't seem funny.

Can you manually save a new bookmark? If not, try this:

First, if you haven't already, please do a normal shutdown and/or restart of your system. Restarting Windows can help by freeing up locked files, completing any deferred updates, and resolving temporary file permission issues.

Next, if Firefox still has bookmark problems, could you let us know what you get when you run the "Verify Integrity" diagnosis and repair function. That's here:

Open Firefox's Troubleshooting Information page using any of these methods:

  • "3-bar" menu button > Help > More Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > More Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

Near the bottom, there is a section titled Places Database -- that's the file which stores history and bookmarks. Click the button labeled Verify Integrity. There may be a 10-15 second delay before results appear.

If all is well, the report that appears below the button should start with:

> Task: checkIntegrity
+ The places.sqlite database is sane
+ The favicons.sqlite database is sane
> Task: invalidateCaches
+ The caches have been invalidated
> Task: checkCoherence
+ The database is coherent

Does yours say the databases are sane and coherent, or something else? You can select and copy the report, and then paste it into a reply for review and comment.

thank you for answering, here is the information I got :

> Task: checkIntegrity - Unable to fix corruption, places.sqlite will be replaced on next startup > Task: checkCoherence - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task. > Task: expire - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task. > Task: vacuum - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task. > Task: stats - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task. > Task: _refreshUI - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task.

I can't bookmark any pages, I tried it just now, the first thing I did was to restart windows hoping it would fix the issue, it didn't, I thought about just reinstalling however I want to know what is causing this error so I can hopefully avoid the issue in the future.

That first result indicates that Firefox wasn't able to repair the file, but we don't have any information about why not. What should happen is, the next time you exit/quit Firefox and start it up again, it should rename that file to something like places.sqlite-corrupt and create a new places.sqlite using your last automatic bookmark backup.

I don't know whether this is a problem in Firefox 144, since it is happening to a lot of users in the past 10 days, or whether it was caused by some other software update (system software, security software, etc.). In a different thread, a user reported that every time they start their system, Firefox can't access bookmarks, but they can fix it by quitting Firefox and restarting it. So it sounds like whatever is locking the file on their computer is transitory.

I restarted my laptop 2 times today and closed it once, after opening Firefox things are rather odd, I still can't import my bookmarks and what's more my history from yesterday is gone, my passwords are saved and still work, the other odd thing is that my search history is not saved anymore, I just checked and nothing is there nor is anything else being saved....yesterday I had the option to try and restore my bookmarks from last week, even if it did not work yet now that is also cleaned out.

I checked again and this is the result :

> Task: checkIntegrity - Unable to fix corruption, places.sqlite will be replaced on next startup > Task: checkCoherence - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task. > Task: expire - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task. > Task: vacuum - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task. > Task: stats - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task. > Task: _refreshUI - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task.

I remember a few months ago, before the laptop switch, I had an issue when all of my bookmarks were gone, from what I remember they came back after I restarted mozilla. Before the problem I remember that when I restarted there was an update for my antivirus program, Avast, it notified me that it needed a restart to take effect.

Your Verify Integrity is still indicating that it needs to replace places.sqlite. But you should still have backup files available to restore; Firefox wouldn't remove those. Could you double-check that Firefox didn't startup in the wrong profile? See the first section of: Recover lost or missing Bookmarks
