Any error messages? If so, posting a screenshot of the SMTP server settings pane, plus the complete error message may be helpful.
Hi David, The problem seems to be that the default the outgoing server, which is by default Yahoo! Mail, is not the appropriate one for my laptop. I can send out from my phone. I don't know what an SMTP server is except it being the type of server. The server name is either send.xtra.co.nz or pop3.xtra.co.nz both are there. Sorry I'm not too computer literate but I'm 80! Regards. Howard
Hi David, I checked my wife's computer and she has the same SMPT as me but hers works! Regards. Howard
Please send screenshot of incoming server settings pane and of the SMTP server settings pane. See attached graphic for sample on where each is. Also, please send full content of error message. thanks,
Hi David, I hope these are what you want. I've entered my password without success. Regards. Howard
I need to see the actual server settings. You need to click the 'edit' button at bottom right and then do the screenshot for SMTP settings. See attached. For incoming, click to account settings, then click the 'server settings' link and then do screenshot
Hi, Hope this is OK David. Howard
Hello there
Yahoo mail. Provider Send.xtra.co.nz. A server name Port 465. Port Number SSL/Tls. Security method/authentication Normal Password. Password Hdlbds. Users name
SMTP Server asks for a description, what do I put in there? Under authentication it says Normal Password but my normal password does not work to send though it's OK to enter and read mail. I have no option to reset the password! I once got a timed out message. If you can't solve this I may need to move away from Thunderbird!
Somehow it seems to be working! So problem solved. Regards. Howard
Hi Howard,
Sorry to hear about your trouble. Thunderbird itself can’t reset your email password, that has to be done on Yahoo’s side.
To reset it, all you need to do is open a web browser and go to login.yahoo.com. Enter your email address, then click Next. On the password screen choose “Forgotten password?” and follow the steps. Yahoo will either send a code to your recovery phone or email, or ask security questions.
Once you create a new password, make sure you can log in to Yahoo Mail on the web first.
Then go back to Thunderbird, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Saved Passwords, remove the old password, and the next time you try to send an email Thunderbird will ask for the new one.
Quick note: If your account has two-step verification, Yahoo may require you to create an “app password” specifically for Thunderbird. You can generate that from your Yahoo account under Account Security > App Passwords and then use it in Thunderbird instead of your normal password. (But we will cross that bridge when and IF it comes)
LOL, it looks like you solved the issue while I was typing a reply. Delighted to hear it! Happy Mailing!
