I am trying to add an email address to thunderbird it is an outlook email address [edited]@outlook.com I have checked the address and the password and both are correct however thunderbird says that the configuration is incorrect and will not accept it. also I have it open in another browser window will that cause problems ?

just enter your name and the email account and do NOT enter password. Let me know what happens.
