Firefox failing to completely close.
So since I updated to the newest Firefox it fails to completely close when I hit X to close it. So the next time I go to open it it says something along the lines "Firefox is stop open but not responding close it before trying to open it again". Didn't do this before and its getting pretty annoying to have to open my task manager every time I want to open Firefox.
Is this a new issue with the new update or is something else conflicting?

In case you are using "Clear history when Firefox closes" then try to disable this feature.
- Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history": [] "Clear history when Firefox closes"

I found that after Firefox v29, a LOT of my settings and
add-ons were changed / reset. Try this;
Start Firefox in Safe Mode
While you are in safe mode;
Firefox Options > Advanced > General.
Look for and turn off Use Hardware Acceleration.
Then check ALL of your settings. Browser and add-ons. Then restart.
Hardware acceleration is already off and I don't use any add-ons. Thanks though.
Hi,
Mozilla recently released an update to 29.0.1 in which several bugs were fixed. Please try updating by going to The image "new fx menu" does not exist. > (Help(?) > About Firefox.
That's the version I'm using.
Try to use "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: Firefox > Quit Firefox; Linux: Firefox/File > Quit) to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the Firefox title bar.
I have this problem, also. I have tried every one of these suggestions and still have the problem. Strange, tho, it only happens 80-90% of the time. Also, I have tried to exactly repeat my actions (same web site, same entries, etc.) and it does not always result in the problem. I have even turned of flash in Plugins and that did not matter.
I had said in an earlier post; Look for and turn off Use Hardware Acceleration.
That is because when I was checking my settings, Use Hardware Acceleration
had been turned on. I always had it off before.

I have tried with both Hardware Accelerating on and off. It does not seem to make a difference.
Lately, I have been using 'Alt F4' to shut down Firefox. So far I have not had the problem using this method. Too soon to be sure.
BTW, using "Exit" under "File" has not seemed to help.

This appears to have fixed my problem.
Well, now I guess I have a new problem. "Cannot use option to clear history when I close Firefox."
Do NOT understand most of W8.1...presently trying to set History To Clear When Firefox Is Shut Down. Saw the following: "In case you are using "Clear history when Firefox closes" then try to disable this feature.
Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history": [] "Clear history when Firefox closes" "
Sorry but I do not understand how DISABLING a setting will cause the setting to be/do what I need it to do. Clicking on History, then Clicking "clear recent history," which I guess is the thing to do (??) causes the Menu page to vanish. So I know there are things this computer needs but do not know how to make those things work. Could someone please explain this thing to me, possibly tell me what I am doing wrongly? Thanks for reading, and TIA.
What do you mean with causes the Menu page to vanish. What Menu page do you mean?
You should get a pop-up dialog with some settings (you may need to click Details) if you click (open) "Clear Recent History". Also make sure that you aren't in permanent Private Browsing mode.
Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
- Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
- Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window
Cor-el, what I mean by "Menu" would be the icon at upper right-hand corner of, for instance, this page right here. As best the comp-dunce here can answer your question about "What menu page do you mean?," my question was about the following: "Clicking on History, then Clicking "clear recent history," I DO click on history and then on Clear recent history. As said in my question. So I guess the answer to "Menu page" question would be: The result on clicking on upper right-hand corner MENU icon as History Clearing instructions direct. Then comes the instruction to "Clear recent history" Downside: Clicking on Clear recent history seems to be what makes the Menu Options to become absent from monitor screen or whatever we call the thing being read right here. So. By "menu page," I was talking about clicking on "menu icon," clicking, by which I meant Selecting for "Clear recent history" and then "Clicking on Recent history..." Which is what History-clearing instructions say to do.
I am sorry that I have so much trouble doing such things that should be done simply...but I just do not understand the instructions. I so wish the situation were different but when I follow site instructions to clear history, I rather expect that History Clearing will happen. But the history will not clear then, will not clear at shut down which I have set to happen...this situation is hair-tearingly frustrating. But I do the things you suggest, except that I have not yet tried "Start Firefox in Safe Mode." Safe mode is one of the many things I do not understand about computers...and I do not know what is meant by "Add-ons, Extensions, Themes." Computers have THEMES? I thought that "themes" meant what photo or photos, or just about anything else the computer owner selected to show on desktop when turning the computer on. Wrong, huh? Also have no idea what Hardware Acceleration is. It seems to me that a lot of my problems here have to do with the new W8.1 and how I vehemently dislike it, ditto disliking Microsoft's insistence that the W8 and/or W8.1 be used to the exclusion of all else including the W7 I could at least understand. This W8.1 seems a lot like "going mosquito-hunting with an elephant gun," by which I mean that I think the new W8.1 is more computer than a person in their home really needs; I have been told that 8/8.1 are mostly for the use of developers, web site builders, and the like. As a simple person sitting at home trying to understand this bleeping W8.1, I am about to pitch my computer into our lake. Getting it to operate as it seems it should is just too annoyingly difficult. And: About your "Start Firefox in Safe Mode," I have no idea how that is done and, therefore, a large fear of trying to do that only to have something odd go uncorrectably wrong. I am truly sorry to have to tell you that. But I do appreciate your trying to help me. Thank you. Omnigusted.
My Firefox v.32 on a Mac won't close when I use Command-Q or when I use the menu for close. The windows do close, but not the application. Furthermore, force close also does not always work. The Macs are running OS 10.9.4; one is a Macbook Pro, the other a Mac Pro.
