I noticed the problem with the troubleshooting information previously but then could not recreate it. I will have to remember to look into that. Thanks for mentioning it.

I will look at your Crash Reports shortly. Minimising the number of open tabs can help, and it is a good idea to bookmark any that are important. I do not think 40 open tabs is exceptional. I know some users often have hundreds open.

Hi again miha25, I have now had an initial look at your Crash Reports.

The System details do not show well. The auto generated list is not easily edited. I am not even sure myself how to correctly edit it and I doubt we have any documentation on that !

Your problem is memory related and is going to be very difficult to troubleshoot. Obviously you have many extensions. As a troubleshooting step could I ask you to try to use Firefox as much as possible in safe mode and with all plugins disabled, leaving it running overnight like that. Does that prevent crashes, if not please provide Crash IDs for crashes occurring in such a configuration.

Initial troubleshooting suggestions

1. Try Firefox in safe mode,and with all plugns disabled. See:
   Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode
   Disable or remove Add-ons_how-to-disable-plugins
2. If that fails to help try again from safe mode but this time with a new additional clean profile.
   Profile Manager - Create, remove or switch Firefox profiles_creating-a-profile
3. Please post back with how you get on. If crashes continue please paste another half dozen crash report IDs in to your reply.
   • Please confirm (or otherwise) that the Crash IDs were from safe mode and with plugins disabled.

I was just starting to reply to you, when - funny - Firefox crashed again. This time with report bp-3b873059-7089-49b1-9f09-e28dd2140108 (add-ons activated).

I understand that troubleshooting is difficult and I want to help as much as I can. However, I use Firefox as my working tool and I rely on it and the add-ons as well. Which means that if I use it in safe mode, it will be pretty useless for me. I could run another instance in safe mode with a different profile just for the bug hunt, but I guess the problems wouldn't arise if i wouldn't use it.

Is there another way to troubleshoot the problems with the "real" environment, not the safe mode?

If you want, I can generate and send you the whole auto generated report via e-mail or post it here. I trimmed the report in this question because it was too long.

If you are happy working with multiple profiles that is great. Use of multiple profiles is not officially supported and documented within this forum's kb, as it is considered too advanced for the majority of users.

With multiple profiles it is possible to tailor what is in use to the type of work task you are doing that may help reduce the crash frequency, and probably some profiles will prove to be crash free.

Using Safe Mode is a quick trouble shooting step as is the clean profile.

If we are able to demonstrate it does not crash in a clean profile and with plugins disabled we know Firefox is all-right and it is either an addon or one of the none safe mode modifications. So we have quickly narrowed down the cause.

If it still crashes in safemode and without plugins we may get a more specific Crash Signature (IIRC there were 4 separate signatures in the initial batch of reports) If necessary we are then also on the way to producing Steps To Reproduce for filing a bug to get developers involved involved in solving the problem.

It is extremely unlikely any engineer will look at a memory crash bug relating to multiple addons and multiple site browsing. It is up to us to file a bug that it is suitable to reproduce and possible to work on. Or alternatively by a process of elimination pin down the cause to the guilty site, addon or whatever.

As for the troubleshooting info please paste that into its own separate reply. Edit out all the print related information as that is not relevant to this current problem. I do not remember the text limit on these forum replies but I imagine it will easily fit. Just post the information. Post any comments in a separate reply. Instead of the auto generated report,please just use the one from the Troubleshooting page

As someone happy to work with multiple profiles you will also be able to work with multiple installs of Firefox. At least one of your Crash types may possibly be avoidable in the latest versions of Firefox.

Try using Firefox Aurora (Currently that channel is Fx 28) You could use that with the current profile, but better still try it with a cloned copy of the current profile. That should allow you to work near enough as normal whilst eliminating any risk to your current profile.

I'm sorry that my report from the previous post is in Slovenian, but I think you can manage to get relevant info out of it.

I have started FF in safe mode with add-ons disabled and will try to use it like this. I will also leave it running for the night and see if it's still here in the morning.

One thing you can try is to disable graphics hardware. Many have reported problems with it. Also, if you have time (sorry), disable ALL of your add-ons and ALL of your plug-ins. See if you still have a problem. If not, re-enable two or three and try again. Keep going until the problem comes back.

Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.

You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).

Then perform these steps:

• Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
• In the Firefox options window click the Advanced tab, then select "General".
• In the settings list, you should find the Use hardware acceleration when available checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
• Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.

Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:

FredMcD, I have hardware acceleration turned off - exactly because I have read can make Firefox more stable - but it doesn't really make a change.

Playing with the add-ons and plugins will take a lot of time because these crashes happen (or not) after some hours or days of use. So I will try with the safe mode for a couple of days first.

I see that in both cases you are using a Windows XP computer and that the crash reports indicate an OOM (out-of-memory) problem where Firefox isn't able to allocate enough memory to continue working.
Windows XP isn't very good with handling such cases when you run out of memory or do not have much memory installed.

Did you try to increase the size of the page file?

You may also need to install extra physical memory to have more head room before needing to swap to the page file. Also make sure to run as less other applications alongside of Firefox as possible. Check the programs that startup at boot as well or boot the computer in Windows Safe mode as a test.

I see that both threads that you created are about the Firefox 27 beta release.

Does the current Firefox release crash as well?

I didn't try to increase the swap file.

Extra physical memory above 4GB can't be allocated in 32bit Windows, so I don't plan doing this.

Yes, I'm using beta channel on both machines running version 27 currently and updating whenever there is an update. These problems have been going on for many versions, but I don't know when they started. Which current relase are you referring to, the one from stable (release) channel? I haven't tried that but I can if it will help. However note that it's hard to test if it happens or not because Firefox has to be running for some hours or days before it crashes.

Just a couple of comments

1. Firefox Safe Mode does disable hardware acceleration
   • But Safe Mode does not disable plugins. That needs to be done separately.
2. it is commonly suggested having a page file 1.5 x Ram. Workarounds will allow a page file allocation totalling over 4GB, create multiple page files, use a second drive, partition, or folder.

I'm updating this thread with the latest crashes on this machine (or should I open a new thread?). I'm now using FF 28 beta channel but I'm still using it mostly in normal mode, not safe mode.
