Java Deployment Toolkit and Japanese
I can't figure out how to enable Japanese in Firefox. Since following existing tutorials yielded no positive results, I tried installing the latest Java, but that only made things worse. Now I have two problems:
I still can't view Japanese characters. I can't uninstall the Java Deployment Toolkit plugin.
The tutorials I've found on uninstalling the plugin don't work because I don't have the options they say to use. I'm using Firefox version 24.0 on Windows XP.

Try running a Mozilla Plugin Check from here.

I appreciate your prompt answer, and sorry for my delayed reply. Shortly after my original post, I got a virus and had to reformat my hard drive. As a consequence, the Java Deployment Toolkit is no longer an issue, but displaying Japanese is. I visited the link you posted, but it hasn't helped me enable Japanese.

Thank you!
Make sure that you have installed East Asian language support.
Attached is a screenshot. There is a bug in East Asian language support for Windows XP that prevents it from being uninstalled. Is there an alternative?
No, you won't be able to see the Japanese characters unless you install East Asian language support in Windows XP.
What is the problem with installing this support?
It's impossible to remove from Windows XP. This happened to me previously. I got stuck with ~230 MB of fonts I'll never use cluttering up space for font selection in various programs.
Is there a plugin that can be used in lieu of installing the East Asian language support? This perhaps? https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/quick-translator/?src=search
