I use clippings frequently but recently they disappeared so I re installed clippings, they came back but have gone again. I have checked add ons and all is ok.

It looks as though you have version 4.0.1, which lists "Bug fix: Disappearing clippings after upgrade to version 4.0".
However, if you had version 4.0, you may need this recovery procedure: the AE Creations blog: Disappearing Clippings data after upgrading to version 4.0.
Does that work? I still have version 3.2 and suddenly I'm not in a hurry to update...
