Firefox is not remembering, or offering to remember, passwords any longer.

Posted

I recently had a bout with the Babylon search engine browser hijacker. I uninstalled everything and ran a spyware scan using Malwarebytes. Then, I went through all my passwords and changed them in case any of my information was compromised.

However, now none of the updated passwords are being remembered, and firefox isn't even bringing up the window to offer them when I type them in. New sites that didn't have a previous password (like this one) are still bringing up the prompt.

I followed the steps in this article (http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/usernames-and-passwords-are-not-saved?redirectlocale=en-US&redirectslug=Username+and+password+not+remembered) and this one (http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-extensions-themes-to-fix-problems) with no results.

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems article.

Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

Hi Tyler - thanks for getting back so quick.

I've done this already - it was one of the first suggestions in the articles I linked to. It didn't help.

It is possible that there is a problem with the key3.db and signons.sqlite files that store the encrypted names and passwords in Firefox.
Rename the key3.db and signons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder.
You can add .old to the file names (key3.db.old and signons.sqlite.old) or move them to another folder to make it possible to undo the action.
You need to set a new Master Password after renaming or deleting key3.db and all currently saved passwords are lost.
If that has worked then you can remove the renamed files that are no longer needed.
